- ISTD MODERN & TAP The syllabi we are using, are the ‘Modern Theatre’ and the ‘Tap’ syllabus of the ISTD (Imperial Society for Teachers of Dance).
The ISTD is an international dance organization (www.istd.org), based in London, which has a variety of 12 different dance styles to offer. The advantage of the ISTD as an international organization is that your child will be able to continue with his / her dance anywhere if you would maybe have to move or immigrate, as the exams are internationally accredited and recognized. There is a variety of ISTD studios all over the country as well as internationally.
Primary Modern & Tap Introductory syllabus class in either the Modern or Tap dance style, for ages 5 – 6 years and up. It is very simple and playful syllabi, but with definite focus and principles of the chosen dance style. Here they will also have the first opportunity to be entered for an examination, where they go into the exam room with the teacher. Grades 1 – 6 The grades are vocational dance syllabi, with a minimum age of 6 years. The name “grade” is only an indication of the level, which does not necessarily have anything to do with the students’ actual grade in school. In the grades the dancer does an international examination every year to go on to the next grade, and from grade 1 the dancers go into the exam with fellow-dancers, but without the teacher. Intermediate, Advanced 1 & 2 These grades are called the majors, and this is when a dancer starts to get serious about their future in dance, as in making a career out of it in some way. In the majors the previous level HAVE to be done to be able to progress to the next level. All these levels have to be completed for a student to to their Associate exam, which enables them on the pathway to become an ISTD teacher. The dancers still do the International examinations, but from here on, preparing for the exam may take more than a year. They still go into the exam with fellow-dancers, without the teacher.
